Reverberation Measurements of Quasars and the Size-Mass-Luminosity Relations in Active Galactic Nuclei
نویسنده
چکیده
A 7.5 years spectrophotometric monitoring program of 28 Palomar-Green quasars to determine the size of their broad emission line region (BLR) is reviewed. We find both the continuum and the emission line fluxes of all quasars to vary during this period. Seventeen objects has adequate sampling for reverberation mapping and in all of them we find the Balmer line variations to lag those of the continuum by ∼100 days. This study increases the available luminosity range for studying the size–mass–luminosity relations in active galactic nuclei (AGNs) by two orders of magnitude and doubles the number of objects suitable for such studies. Combining our results with data available for Seyfert 1 galaxies, we find the BLR size to scale with the rest-frame 5100 Å luminosity as L. This result is different from previous studies, and suggests that the effective ionization parameter in AGNs may be a decreasing function of luminosity. We are also able to constrain, subject to the assumption that gravity dominates the motions of the BLR gas, the scaling relation between the mass of the central black hole and the AGN’s luminosity. We find that the central mass scales with the 5100 Å luminosity as M ∝ L. A program to monitor 11 high-luminosity quasars is presented here for the first time. Preliminary results from this program indicate continuum variation of order of 0.1 mag in all objects. We illustrate the importance and feasibility of monitoring those objects spectrophotometrically. When this program will be completed reverberation mapping studies will cover the entire AGNs luminosity range from 10 to 10 ergs s.

Reverberation Mapping of High-luminosity Quasars: First Results
Reverberation mapping of nearby active galactic nuclei has led to estimates of broad-line-region (BLR) sizes and central-object masses for some 37 objects to date. However, successful reverberation mapping has yet to be performed for quasars of either high luminosity (above Lopt ∼ 1046 erg s−1) or high redshift (z & 0.3). Over the past six years, we have carried out, at the Hobby-Eberly Telesco...

Context. It has been shown that the luminosity of active galactic nuclei and the size of their broad line region obey a simple relation of the type RBLR = aL, from faint Seyfert nuclei to bright quasars, allowing single-epoch determination of the central black hole mass MBH = bL∆Hβ from their luminosity L and width of Hβ emission line. Adopting this mass determination for cosmological studies r...
متن کاملDetermining Central Black Hole Masses in Distant Active Galaxies
An empirical relationship, of particular interest for studies of high redshift active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and quasars, between the masses of their central black-holes and rest-frame ultraviolet (UV) parameters measured in single-epoch AGN spectra is presented. This relationship is calibrated to recently measured reverberation masses of low-redshift AGNs and quasars. An empirical relationship...
متن کاملThe largest black holes and the most luminous galaxies
The empirical relationship between the broad line region size and the source luminosity in active galactic nuclei (AGNs) is used to obtain black holes (BH) masses for a large number of quasars in three samples. The largests BH masses found exceed 10 M⊙ and are correlated, almost linearly, with the source luminosity. Such BH masses, when converted to galactic bulge mass and luminosity, indicate ...
متن کاملTesting Radiation Pressure Corrections to Reverberation Mapping Masses
Multi-epoch reverberation mapping of the Seyfert galaxy, NGC 5548, suggests that radiation pressure is not strongly biasing the black hole (BH) masses derived for active galactic nuclei (AGNs). The model proposed by Marconi et al. to account for radiation pressure in BH mass estimates fails to explain the observations of NGC 5548, the only AGN with reverberation campaigns spanning a sufficientl...
